//// WORKING WITH ME ////
So you’re thinking of working with me? Nice.
firstly, I would highly reccomend you do. The user experience is very good.
Secondly, here is what you need to know about how ADHD & Austim impact my work:
Absolutley nothing.
You don’t actually need to know anything about how ADHD & Austim impact my work. I manage it very well, and you probably won’t even notice. Feel free to stop reading here.
But, if you would like to know more about how ADHD & Austim impact my work, here you go:
- I move around a lot.
I mean A lot.
I am in near-constant motion and I have a tic where I move / twitch my neck and shoulders. Please don’t be offended if I stand up abruptly during a zoom call, or in a meeting, or on a bus, or anywhere really - it usually helps me to concentrate and hopefully won’t be too distracting for you. It is never intended to cut off a thought or idea, and it doesn’t mean I am bored, it usually means I need to stand up for some reason that is still a mystery to me.
Also, while it can seem like the tic / motion means I am agitated, it doesn’t. It’s actually self-soothing, and helps me a lot.
- I cannot control the volume of my voice.
This can be very inconvenient if for some reason you choose to meet me in a library or art gallery.
If I am being too loud, and it makes you / hypothetical patrons of the library uncomfortable, please don’t hestitate to tell me “Eros, you’re being loud.” I won’t be offended!
- I can get very excited and am prone to interrupting
Commonly for people with Autism & ADHD, I can get very exctied by an idea and begin a rambling monologue that I hope is charming but probably will come across as me being an twat. I can also interrupt routinley out of excitement. Please know that I don’t mean to do this intentionally, and I will always do my best to catch myself if I do start going on and on.
- I might be late
Due to a lifelong fear of lateness I tend to be early for most things, but when I am busy or on a project, I may well be late to meetings. I will do my best to avoid this, but it is often said that people with ADHD operate on a 26hour day - in other words, we are perpetually overbooked, and life is chaos. Please know that it’s never intentionally or intended as a sign of disrespect.
- I can struggle to read social cues
Commonly for people with Autism, I can struggle to read subtle social cues. This can lead to a perception of insensitivity or not caring, which is most definetley NOT the case! I may just need to be told directly how yourself / someone else is feeling for me to understand it properly. I aim to tell everyone I work with this ahead of time, but please do not hesitate to pull me aside to chat about anything that is bothering you - and please know that I am never ever intentionally indifferent!
- I don’t work in a conventional manner, you don’t have to either
I pride myself on an unconventional approach to work. I prize creative thinking and don’t believe in formal hierachy, I like any work environment I’m involved in to be extremely tolerant to differences. These may be visible or invisible. I know from personal experience that I have immense amounts to offfer, even though I have additional needs / ways of working that do not fit easily into rigid structures. I want to extend that same thinking to everyone I work with.
